California veterinarians Paul George and Richard Turner successfully completed a root canal on a 550-pound Bengal Tiger named "Kubie."
According to George, who headed the effort to repair the cat's mouth once it was asleep, completing the root canal was the easy part.
"This one was quite large," he said of the cat. "The biggest concern was the anesthetic."
Another challenge, George added, was adapting human tools to deal with Tiger teeth, which are approximately three-to-four times longer than a human tooth.
"They really don't make the instruments and we had to make some up as we went along. We were able to do that and successfully complete the root canal."
