Need a signature confirmation on your next FedEx home delivery? Starting this summer, it'll cost you.
FedEx Corp. will begin leaving packages and envelopes on U.S. residential doorsteps by default, unless shippers pay a minimum of $1.50 to require signature confirmation.
The world's largest air-express carrier said Friday that many of its residential customers found the current policy of requiring signatures unless a waiver is signed to be inconvenient. "Our data shows that what they want is they would prefer they just left the package," said spokesman Howard Clabo.
The new policy goes into effect this summer on domestic FedEx Express shipments. For a signature to be required, shippers can pay $1.50 for an "indirect signature" -- from anyone at the residence or a neighbor. For two dollars, a signature from someone at the residence is required, and for $2.75, an adult signature is needed.
The three fee-based signature options will also be available on FedEx Ground, the company said.
