A moderate earthquake shook Quebec early Sunday, jolting some people awake. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages, authorities said.
The epicenter of the 5.4-magnitude temblor was near Riviere-du-Loup, 250 miles northeast of Montreal, according to Sylvia Hayek of the Department of Natural Resources.
The quake, registered at 1:17 a.m. EST, was felt in Montreal and Boston, 375 miles south of the epicenter, and the federal capital of Ottawa, 310 miles west of Riviere-du-Loup, near the St. Lawrence River.
Hayek said quakes are common in Quebec’s Charlevoix area, but most are too small to be felt.
