Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Wednesday said Stephen Friedman has been elected to its board of directors, returning to the firm after a two-year stint as an economic adviser to the Bush administration.
Friedman resigned from the Goldman's board in December 2002 to become director of the White House National Economic Council and assistant to President Bush for economic policy.
Friedman, who quit both posts in December, had served as chairman and senior partner of Goldman Sachs from 1990 until he retired in 1994.
During nearly 30 years with Goldman Sachs, Friedman was co-head of the investment banking and fixed income divisions as well as head of mergers and acquisitions. Friedman rose to the top ranks of the company, serving as co-chief operating officer and then co-chairman of the firm with Robert Rubin.
Friedman become sole chairman when Rubin left to join the Clinton administration in 1992.
Outside of Goldman, Friedman is also chairman emeritus of New York's Columbia University.
