The helicopter crashed northwest of the capital on Friday after it took off from Camp Arifjan, a U.S. military base in southern Kuwait, a military statement said.

"One AH-64 Apache pilot was killed and a second injured in a training accident," it added. The soldiers were not named pending notification of their families.

Kuwait hosts an average 30,000 U.S. troops year round. It is a key transit point for civilians, U.S. and foreign troops going into neighboring Iraq.

Kuwait was the launch pad for the 2003 war that toppled Saddam Hussein.
