The U.S. government could demand that DaimlerChrysler AG's Dodge recall 600,000 Durango and Dakota four-wheel drive vehicles on concerns over their safety, CBS News reported Thursday.
The model years range from 2000 through 2003, the television news broadcast said.
The cars are the subject of an investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the carmaker said it had until Monday to respond to the regulator.
"We are in the final stages of an investigation by NHTSA and us," Dieter Zetsche, Chrysler's president and chief executive, told Reuters. He said there was no recall of the vehicles at this stage.
"We have until Monday to respond," said a spokesman for Chrysler.
