Defense contractor Raytheon Co on Thursday posted a loss for the second quarter, including charges for early retirement of debt and a lawsuit settlement.
The Waltham, Massachusetts, maker of military electronics, missile systems and business aircraft, reported a loss from continuing operations of $94 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, compared with profit of $186 million, or 45 cents per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2003.
The 2004 quarter included an after-tax charge for the early retirement of debt of $24 million, or 6 cents per share, and a charge for settling a shareholder lawsuit of $222 million, or 51 cents per diluted share. Non-cash pension expense hurt the quarter by 12 cents per share on a year-over-year basis.
Including discontinued operations, the company had a net loss of $108 million, or 25 cents per share, compared to net income of $100 million, or 24 cents per diluted share, a year earlier.
