Both the Senate and House were in session Saturday trying to come to a conclusion to avert a default on America's debt.

With almost two weeks into the shutdown California Sen. Barbara Boxer says she’s anxious and worried for the people it’s affecting. Boxer joined Weekends with Alex Witt to share her thoughts on the first government shutdown in 17 years.

Having just taken a vote on discussing a clean extension of the debt ceiling that would have spared America from defaulting on its bills, Boxer was frustrated that the motion was ultimately struck down by Senate Republicans, all of whom voted it down. Despite the vote, she said leaders from both sides are trying to work something out.

“Having our leaders talk is critical, and it is happening,” Boxer said. “I’m just a little stunned at this vote we just had, but I always have hope.”

Her thought on what’s most important were clear: “Open up the government, pay our bills, and then we’ll all negotiate.”
