Back in the days when people used phones, political campaigns had hotlines. What happens when you call those numbers today?
California Governor Jerry Brown’s iconic 1992 presidential campaign hotline is still in operation, San Francisco Chronicle pop culture critic Peter Hartlaub discovered this week. The paper says the 1-800 number gets about one call a day and a message redirects callers to Brown’s current political operation.
So Steve Kornacki, child of the nineties, was inspired not only to talk about this on the show this week, but to call the other big presidential hotlines of the decade – Bill Clinton, Mario Cuomo, Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot – to see what he might find on the other end of the line.
