In the midst of partisan fighting over the ongoing government shutdown, shots rang out at the U.S. Capitol Thursday afternoon. By early evening, a broad sketch of the series of events leading up to the shooting was confirmed. A woman tried unsuccessfully to ram her car into the White House gate, fled the scene, and was chased down by Secret Service. Ultimately, the woman was shot and killed. The Capitol was briefly placed under lock down, but Capitol Police soon declared the situation “under control” and “an isolated incident.” Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia will join Chris Hayes to talk about the day’s harrowing events.

Before the dramatic scene unfolded at the Capitol, Republicans were out pushing their message blaming Democrats for the government shutdown and gridlock. Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, and Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Republican from Texas, will join Chris to discuss the effectiveness of the GOP’s talking points.

Later, Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association, Sam Seder, host of The Majority Report, and Ben Domenech, Publisher of The Federalist and Senior Fellow at the Heartland Institute, will join Chris Hayes to talk about Republicans’ misleading messaging about funding for the National Institutes of Health. GOPers have latched on to the NIH as an example of the harm done by the “Democrats’ shutdown,” when they have refused to support the Institutes themselves in the past.
