New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner beat out democratic front-runner Christine Quinn at the end of June, but just one month later, Weiner’s poll numbers—and plenty more sexting details—have dropped down onto the laps of the disgraced former congressman’s campaign.
A new Quinnipiac poll reveals that Weiner has slipped from first to fourth place on the democratic ticket—tumbling down from 26% of voters to just 16%. Forty percent of New York voters also think that Weiner’s latest sexting scandal disqualifies him from the mayor’s seat.
“Voters….are getting fed up with the changing stories,” Salon.com’s Joan Walsh told MSNBC host Thomas Roberts. “The story of redemption wasn’t quite the way he told it.”
The sudden drop comes after yet another online extramarital affair surfaced. The only difference between this scandal and the last? Weiner was already ousted from Congress when he admitted to sexting this time around.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn takes the lead at 26% in the latest poll, and is followed by New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio (21%) and former New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson (20%).
De Blasio condemned Weiner’s candidacy and weak polling on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday, saying: “I think he has invalidated himself as a public figure.”
If Weiner were to drop out of the race, de Blasio added that Weiner’s approval was “not an endorsement [he] would seek.”
However, ThinkProgress’ Judd Legum suggests things could be worse for Weiner:
“This race is playing out fairly well for him,” Legum said, even though Weiner may not win. “…If you look down the road, he would have a much stronger case to run again.”
