A month after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Delaware Gov Jack Markell proposed a 5-part package of bills aimed at reducing gun violence. Universal background checks, the bill that has the best chance of passing, is expected to be debated on the legislature floor Thursday.

States are better reflecting the national opinion on gun control, Markell said on Wednesday’s Morning Joe.

“If you look nationally, there’s overwhelming public support for a number of these proposals—really common sense proposals—but many folks in Washington just don’t want to hear it.”

Despite the support of background checks from Americans, Congress has had trouble pushing the bill forward. The Senate has already abandoned its plans to reauthorize the assault weapons ban.

“Many of thought after Sandy Hook, Connecticut, you know the moment was right to focus on some really common sense proposals,” Markell said. “It’s not shaking out that way.”
