President Obama met with U.S. allies in the Middle East this week, making his first trip to Israel since he assumed office.
“Peace is possible,” he said during his trip. “I’m not saying it’s guaranteed. I can’t even say that it is more likely than not. But it is possible.”
Obama arrived in Isreal Wednesday and met with President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also addressed Israeli students at the Jerusalem International Convention Center on Thursday, where he pushed for a two-state solution. “Look to the future that you want for your own children–a future in which a Jewish, democratic vibrant state is protected and accepted,” President Obama said. “Today, as we face the twilight of Israel’s founding generation, you–the young people of Israel–must now claim the future.”
President Obama also met with Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, in Ramallah on Thursday. On Friday, he flew to Jordan to meet with King Abdullah, a key U.S. ally, as they discussed the escalating civil war in Syria and a need for peace in Israel.
