A video allegedly depicting child pornography appeared on Facebook last night, leaving many of the social network's users disgusted and wondering about the effectiveness of the site's security measures.
The Independent reports that the video, which apparently showed a young girl being abused by an older man, was shared more than 16,000 times and received nearly 4,000 "likes" before being removed by Facebook administrators.
Those who heard about the kiddy-porn scandal took to Twitter to vent their frustration at the presence of such distasteful content.
Twitter user A$AP Triggs said, "I'm done with Facebook dude. People are currently using a child molestation video to get likes. I can't even describe how I feel right now."
Another user, Alejandra, said, "After that video I don't wanna get on Facebook anymore. They shouldn't allow child pornography."
Despite the fact that Facebook removed the video, images of the footage taken via screenshot were reposted on other social networks.
The Independent said a Facebook spokesperson told reporters that it worked "swiftly"to delete the video.
"Nothing is more important to Facebook than the safety of the people that use our site, and this material has no place on Facebook," the spokesperson said.
"We have zero tolerance for child pornography being uploaded on Facebook and are extremely aggressive in preventing and removing child exploitive content. We are pleased that this material was reported to us quickly enabling its swift removal."
Last May, Facebook began using Microsoft's PhotoDNA program in an effort to filter the approximately 200 million photos uploaded daily to the site.
The program works to filter images and data quickly, and Facebook said it helps remove thousands of indecent images from the site every day.
