City commissioners here have appointed one of their own to serve the time remaining on Irv Honigsberg's term as mayor.
The commissioners appointed Ward 6 Commissioner Ernie Currier to succeed Honigsberg as mayor during a special meeting on Tuesday.
Honigsberg, who still had about a year left in his term, died Sunday of complications from pulmonary fibrosis.
"I'm honored you would have that confidence in me. It's humbling, but I will work my butt off," Currier said.
Currier is the longest-tenured city commissioner and reportedly was recommended by Honigsberg during a recent discussion with City Attorney Carol Lahman.
Commissioners also approved a proclamation recognizing Honigsberg for his many contributions to the city.
Currier, vice president for commercial lending at Security National Bank since 1996, has been Ward 6 commissioner for about three years.
Currier said he would pursue the same issues he had as a commissioner, including an employee pay increase.
The commission also voted to open applications for the Ward 6 commission seat being vacated by Currier.
