Emmy Award-winning meteorologist Sean McLaughlin will join MSNBC as a weather anchor in July, it was announced today by Mark Effron, Vice President, News, Daytime Programming. McLaughlin will also serve as weather reporter on the Sunday edition of NBC’s “Weekend Today.”
“Sean is multi-talented, and that’s what we look for at MSNBC,” said Effron. “He can communicate important and potentially life-impacting weather news, and will report from the scene of major weather stories. He has a way about him that connects with all kinds of viewers.”
McLaughlin was most recently the chief meteorologist, anchor, and general assignment reporter for KPNX-TV in Phoenix, Ariz. A reporter with a diverse background, McLaughlin has covered the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, was a fill-in weather anchor for NBC’s “Weekend Today” and reported from Dublin, Ireland for MSNBC’s Millennium 2000 coverage. McLaughlin is a five-time Emmy Award winning journalist, and has also received a “Best of Gannett” company award three times for his weather and news anchoring.
Previously, McLaughlin served as weather anchor and general assignment reporter at KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, Calif. He began his career as a news reporter and anchor at KIMT-TV and WOI-TV in Iowa.
McLaughlin graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. He holds a certificate in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University. He and his wife Emily have one daughter, Mia.
