A small aircraft crashed short of a runway and knocked down power lines Sunday night at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, airport and federal officials said. There was no immediate word on survivors.
The plane, a Beech Bonanza registered to a Raleigh company, crashed about 9:15 p.m. on approach to the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen in Atlanta.
The power lines kept emergency crews from getting close enough to the wreckage to see how many people were aboard and what condition they were in, airport spokeswoman Karen Dunton said. Crews were waiting for utility workers to make sure the area was safe, she said.
The accident caused a power outage of about an hour at the airport, but normal air traffic resumed once power was restored, Dunton said.
The plane was registered to FCA Inc. of Raleigh and had taken off from Wilmington, Bergen said.
