Costco Wholesale Corp. on Wednesday declared an initial quarterly dividend of 10 cents per share.

The largest U.S. warehouse club operator, based in Issaquah, Washington, said it expects its quarterly dividends to total 40 cents a share annually.

"We are pleased to be able to return capital to our shareholders and to do so while we continue aggressively to pursue the opening of new locations," said Jim Sinegal, Costco president and chief executive officer, in a release.

The first dividend is payable May 31 to shareholders of record on May 10. Costco operates 433 warehouse stores.
