Charles Tillinghast, MSNBC.com's vice president of sales and business development, has been appointed acting general manager of the news Web site, company officials said Monday. He takes over from Scott Moore, who has been appointed general manager, MSN Network Experience, at Microsoft.

MSNBC is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC.

“MSNBC.com has seen strong growth during Scott’s tenure, and I intend to accelerate that progress,” said Tillinghast. “I’m excited at this opportunity.”

Tillinghast joined MSNBC.com in 1999 as business development manager. Prior to that, he held business development and sales positions in the software, semiconductor and health care industries.

He holds a bachelor's degree in American civilization from Brown University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He serves on the board of trustees of Albertson College of Idaho.

MSNBC.com expects a final decision on the general manager position within three months.

For the past two years, Moore has served as general manager, MSN news and information, which includes oversight of MSNBC.com.

It was his second stint at MSNBC.com. He previously headed sales for the site after its 1996 launch. He also oversaw Slate magazine in his role as general manager for MSN news and information.

“I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to lead such a talented and dedicated group of professionals, and accepting a new position was a difficult decision,” said Moore. “The Internet as a news medium is ascendant, and I look forward to watching MSNBC.com’s contribution to the national dialogue continue to grow.”

In his new role Moore will manage the group that publishes the MSN home page, My MSN, many of the smaller MSN channels and a variety of network editorial packages and custom ad solutions.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Scott, who has calmly steered MSNBC.com through some major changes,” said Dean Wright, editor in chief of MSNBC.com. “He’s been extremely supportive of our editorial team’s efforts to produce high-quality journalism.”
