Madison - The issue of gay marriage takes center stage under the dome.
The state Assembly is scheduled to vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriages and civil unions. As lawmakers debated the proposal in chambers, outside people on both sides of the issue converged to voice their opinions.
State law defines marriage as a union between a husband and a wife. But supporters of the amendment say they fear judges will force the state to allow same–sex marriages as has happened in Massachusetts.
The amendment still has to pass both houses of the Legislature in successive sessions and be approved by voters in a statewide referendum before it takes effect.
