Early tech adopters are more likely to want an Android phone as their next mobile device, according to new data released by Nielson.

Android is currently the most popular operating system among smartphone users, with 40 percent of mobile consumers choosing Android OS over Apple’s iOS (28 percent), Nielson said. Its popularity is only expected to grow as early tech adopters said their next desired operating system would be an Android device.

Only 32 percent said Apple's iOS platform would be their top choice.

However, among those who said they are likely to get a new smartphone in the next year, about one third want their next smartphone to be an iPhone and another one third want an Android device.

Late adopters – or people who do not yet own smartphones – said they weren't sure which operating system they would choose next. This is the group that device makers hope to win over moving forward.

Overall, a whopping 40 percent of mobile users over the age of 18 already have a Web-connected device, according to Nielson, and that number is only expected to grow more moving forward.
