The video documents the hurricane’s evolution from its birth as a tropical wave on August 19, her journey of destruction through the Caribbean, North Carolina, and New York, and its eventual dissipation over Maine on Sunday.

Hurricane Irene battered Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and major metropolitan areas of the Northeast U.S. and at its peak intensity reached Category 3 hurricane status with sustained winds of 125 mph.

The animated video was made using visible and infrared imagery taken every 30 minutes by the GOES-13 weather satellite. Orbiting above the Earth at about 22,300 miles, the satellite aims to captures images of major weather events.
