Two girls are in the hospital after falling through a skylight at a South Dakota middle school.

Two 15-year-old Rapid City girls were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after falling through a skylight of a middle school.

Officers responded to the emergency call to Dakota Middle School at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say three girls were on the roof, and two fell through the skylight onto the gym floor.

Police say they are treating the incident as an accident and no criminal charges will be filed.

Captain Karl Jegeris of the Rapid City Police Department says, "We have had situations with teenagers that get on roofs of other buildings and school buildings; off the top of my head this is the only incident I'm aware of at Dakota Middle School."

Both girls were listed in critical condition.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Authorities are not yet sure how the teenagers were able to get on the roof.
