Members of online retailer Amazon.com Inc.'s premium shipping program will be able to stream CBS Corp. TV shows, the companies said Wednesday.
The companies did not disclose terms of their licensing agreement.
The deal will add 2,000 TV episodes to the content that members of Amazon Prime can already access, bringing the total of free content to over 8,000 movies and TV shows, Amazon said. In February, Amazon began offering about 5,000 movies and TV shows from its on-demand video service to Prime members for free.
Amazon, which is based in Seattle, said that New York-based CBS' shows will also be added this summer to its Instant Video service, which includes over 90,000 movies and TV shows that customers can rent or buy.
Amazon's actions pit it more aggressively against online video streaming and DVD rental service Netflix Inc., the online video pioneer that recently came under fire from customers for raising its DVD-by-mail rates.
Amazon shares fell $2.47 to $215.59 in afternoon trading, while CBS shares rose 72 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $28.68. Shares of Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., fell $5.69 to $281.60.
