A homeless man from Utah has failed to show up in New York to claim the sizable inheritance from his brother.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reported that Max Melitzer was supposed to arrive Thursday at the Albany bus station, where his cousin Richard Goldfarb was waiting for him. But the newspaper said that Melitzer wasn't on any of the buses that pulled into the station.

The successful search for Melitzer made international headlines last week when a private investigator hired by his family's law firm tracked him down on the streets of Salt Lake City. He was pushing a shopping cart filled with his belongings when the investigator informed him that his brother had left him a sizeable estate. News reports said Melitzer, who last had contact with his family in September, was shocked to learn of the inheritance.

Died of cancer
The brother, Morris Melitzer, died in April 2010. The 66-year-old General Electric plant worker, a resident of Schenectady, died of pancreatic cancer, according to The Daily Gazette, which said his estate is worth $100,000.

Last week, Karol Behling, a friend of Melitzer told the Deseret News that he lost his wife, Janice, and two friends in a July 1990 car crash. The tragedy may have led to Melitzer's life on the streets of Salt Lake City, she said.

Melitzer was driving through Wyoming when he lost control of his car, the newspaper reported.

Behling said Melitzer was deeply affected by the loss of his wife and that his life as a transient began soon after the crash.
