Apple is recalling some of its iPad2 tablets that is designed to run on Verizon's network.
"Duplicate MEID codes were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad units for the Verizon 3G network," an Apple spokeswoman said, but declined to say how many units were impacted by the issue. Some estimates are as low as 100.
MEID, which stands for mobile equipment identifier, is a unique number that is used to identify a mobile device when it connects to the network. Two devices cannot have the same MEIDcode.
Apple is replacing the affected units that were already sold with new ones.
The codes are "important in the activation of devices that use Verizon’s cellular network and are designed to be unique to the individual device," said All Things D. The website was told by an Apple representative that the MEID numbers "were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G network."
Verizon declined to comment.
