More than 1,500 people in China donned costumes to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed up as comic book characters.
Participants dressed in a wide array of costumes, from Superman to the Prince of Tennis, a character from a Japanese manga comic book. The event was held to celebrate the grand opening of World Joyland, the world's first anime-themed amusement park.
The record attempt was organized by CCJOY LAND, the company responsible for building World Joyland, which is located in China's Wujin district. The record attempt was held on April 29, the day before the park officially opened its doors to the public.
Participants had to top the previous record of 1,016 people dressed up as comic book characters. GWR judges strictly assessed each costume to make sure that the characters were from comic books and that their costumes were accurate.
Of the 1,731 people that showed up, 201 people were disqualified from participating in the record attempt because they had dressed up as characters from video games, TV shows or story books instead of comic books.
The final total was 1,530 participants, setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed up as comic book characters. The new record was officially declared by GWR on May 31.
