A Detroit police station was briefly evacuated on Thursday after a woman walked in unannounced and turned in grenades she had found in a yard, a spokeswoman said.

The incident on Thursday morning at the Eastern District also forced temporary closure of area streets, spokeswoman Yvette Walker said. The police bomb squad recovered the grenades and detonated them, she said.

"They did evacuate the district for a few minutes, but not long," Walker said. "She found them in a yard or something."

Walker did not know what type of grenades were involved.

Residents sometimes turn in explosives or other materials they have found, Walker said.

"If they bring something they usually call for someone to come out," Walker said. "I wouldn't try to pick it up and take it anywhere."
