A Brooklyn teen who allegedly tried to burn her classmate's eyes out by splashing her with acid during a dispute over a man was freed on $7,500 bail Thursday.
Zhanna Smsarian, 16, was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges that include first-degree attempted assault, The New York Times reported.
Smsarian and the 15-year-old victim, Albina Eshimbaeva, were friends before the Wednesday morning chemistry class attack over a 22-year-old Staten Island man, the New York Daily News reported.
The man, identified only as Mohammad, said he dated Eshimbaeva for a week before they broke up, the Daily News said.
"[Eshimbaeva] was stalking me," the Egyptian-American told the Daily News. Smsarian, he said, assured him that she would handle things.
"I told her to do what she had to do, but I didn't expect her to throw acid," he told the Daily News.
Eshimbaeva could have been blinded but suffered only skin irritation because the diluted solution contained just 10 percent acid, officials said.
The attack came just before the bell rang at Fort Hamilton High School and a teacher quickly flushed Eshimbaeva with water.
She was rushed to the Staten Island University Hospital burn unit and was later released.
"They made a fake fire drill, and got everybody out of the school," student Mohammad Elashry, 15, told the Daily News. "They took us out the sides. Then the cops came in, and took her out the front."
Smsarian admitted she had poured the acid on Eshimbaeva “and was trying to burn Eshimbaeva’s eyes out,” authorities told the Times.
Igor Vaysberg, Smsarian's lawyer, said in court that she was an honor-roll student and had never been in trouble, the Times reported.
Smsarian was charged as an adult and could face up to 15 years if convicted of the most serious charge against her, Sandy Silverstein, a spokesman for the Brooklyn district attorney, told the Times.
