ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 22, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- East impresses the audience by winning 25 - 8 at the 86th East-West Shrine Game®. The longest running college all-star football game took place at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. and was televised for the first time by NFL Network.
Fans gathered to watch the best college football players in the country showcase their talent while supporting the beneficiary of the game, Shriners Hospitals for Children®.
"What is special about our game is that in the end the kids are always the winners," said George Mitchell, Imperial Potentate of Shriners International.
East squad, coached by Dan Reeves, set the tone defensively early in the game over Wade Phillips' West squad. Delone Carter from Syracuse University was the offensive MVP of the game and rushed for 54 yards on 11 carries, including a 16-yard touchdown. The defensive MVP of the game went to defensive tackle, Martin Parker from the University of Richmond.
Players learned the true purpose of the game during a visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Tampa earlier in the week.
