Luzerne County-- Even with the bitterly cold temperatures, we found plenty of people out and about both working and playing Saturday afternoon in Luzerne County. We took a trip around the area to see how everyone was handling the winter chill. With temperatures dipping below zero, lots of people were just trying to stay warm. But many workers had to head to their jobs Saturday, like the car hops at the Sonic Drive-In on Scott Street in Wilkes-Barre Township. They say, when it comes to the cold, you just have to roll with it. Employee Lindsay Bolinski said, "You know, it seems really bad, but after awhile, you just get used to it. You're doing something, you're moving, you're energetic." For the valet staff at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Plains Township, a brisk jog helped shake off the cold as they parked the cars of thousands of people with dreams of winning big- like Rita Cossentina, of Tafton. Cossentina noted, "I think they do a great job, I really do. Because if you park in the parking lot yourself, you have to walk. And you may be way out in left field, so it's really great." But it wasn't all work today. We found plenty of scouts having a whole lot of fun at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre. More than 500 of them took part in the "Winter Fun Day." They learned winter survival skills- like building a fire, played lots of games, and enjoyed some hot refreshments. They also got plenty of help from some of the older kids who came before them. Cara Sepcoski, of Bear Creek, explained, "We're just volunteering because it's a lot of fun. I've been doing this since I was 14 and I come back every year because it's an absolute blast." And that extremely cold air is expected to hover over our region for the next few days. Health officials urge you to dress in warm layers if you have to head outdoors.
