The Brooklyn Navy Yard was once a major shipbuilding facility for some of the nation's most storied warships. Its closure in 1966 was the largest-scale shutdown of any military facility in U.S. history.
Today, the 300-acre site is humming again as an industrial park with a film studio and hundreds of other businesses. A new museum detailing its rich 210-year history is opening there this fall.
Called The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92, the museum will be housed in the 19th-century residence of the former Marine commandant.
The yard's story will be told through historic documents and artifacts left behind by the Navy.
A gallery will be dedicated to its naval hospital. Soldiers from the Civil War through World War II were treated there.
