A retired Houston Police officer recovered at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, the same place Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will undergo therapy.
Daniel Vaughan was shot, while on duty, 17 years ago. He had volunteered to work the front desk at what was the South Central Substation. He walked out of an office, a man pulled a gun and shot him four times. He said his recovery required a total of 65 gallons of blood, and he spent 18 days in a coma.
Vaughan recovered with therapy at TIRR, exercising, he said, ten hours a day.
Vaughan said, "I had to fight like hell. I was fighting the guy who shot me in the front lobby of the police station and I fought all the way to the hospital. Never went unconscious all the way to the hospital. Got out of the coma. Was back at rehab. Had to fight every day to get myself better."
Now he is a book author, certified charter boat captain and a motivational speaker.
The man who shot him was quickly caught and is serving more than 200 years in prison.
