News Corp. and Apple are delaying the launch of the media conglomerate's digital newspaper for the iPad, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The tablet newspaper, which will be called The Daily, was supposed to be unveiled next Wednesday, but the two parties decided they need more time to test a subscription service, the WSJ said.
News Corp. confirmed the delay but declined to comment, the paper said. Neither comment was immediately available for comment.
News Corp. said it planned to launch its long anticipated digital newspaper for tablet devices on Jan. 19 at a joint news event attended by Chairman Rupert Murdoch and Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, according to a person with knowledge of the plan.
The Murdoch company, which generates almost 30 percent of its first quarter revenue annually from publishing, is a making a big bet that starting a newspaper from scratch that is dedicated to tablet devices could help revive the news business.
News Corp. has said the The Daily, will deliver original coverage of news, the arts, lifestyle, sports and opinion.
