Microsoft’s monthly security update for January will ignore an Internet Explorer bug that has existed since early December.

The Jan. 11 update will contain two security patches, both for bugs in Windows. The Internet Explorer vulnerability, first discovered Dec. 9, will remain unpatched.

The current Internet Explorer flaws affect versions 6, 7 and 8 for Windows and Windows Vista, and could allow an attacker to bypass Microsoft’s security defenses and take over a user’s system.

In other security update news, Apple just released a patch to prevent attacks on its newly released OS X 10.6.6. That update can be downloaded at support.apple.com/downloads.
