A dog named Rocky that fell into a 60-foot-deep hole near Malibu was rescued by firefighters equipped with lunch meat Tuesday.

Rocky, a French bulldog, was walking with his owner around 9 a.m. when he stumbled into a 2-foot-wide by 60-foot-deep septic drill hole.

The L.A. County Fire Department responded. To get the dog out, the rescuers lowered a laundry basket filled with lunch meat down to the bottom and attempted to coax Rocky in.

It took nearly 45 minutes, but eventually Rocky made it back to ground level and his happy owner.

The dog was taken to a nearby veterinarian to be examined. Amazingly, he sustained no serious injuries. Firefighters believe water may have broken his fall.
