A woman with a gun was arrested inside the lobby of a TV station in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, local police said.

Police have taken a woman into custody at Charlotte ABC affiliate WSOC-TV after the building was evacuated following reports of an armed woman in the lobby.

The woman was arrested Tuesday night, and then taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Police confirmed that the woman had a gun, but that it was empty.

WSOC General Manager Joe Pomilla said a security guard approached the woman shortly before 5 p.m., and that she then pulled a gun and put it to her head.

The guard got out and someone called police, he said, adding that the building was then locked down and employees told to leave.

Pomilla said the woman was distraught over something but not angry with the station.

WSOC-TV's 5 p.m. newscast went off the air shortly after it started, and the station played commercials for some 10 minutes before going off the air completely.

A WSOC employee relayed to his wife that all employees had left the building safely.
