Police in Waukee said a car climbed a utility pole after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel on Saturday.

The crash happened on 156th Street across from Eason Elementary.

Police said the teenage driver fell asleep, hit the pole and the car shot up the pole and came to rest on its bumper. The driver wasn't hurt in the crash.

Neighbors gathered right after the crash to look at the scene and watch crews remove the car.

"We saw all this dust flying in the air, and when we looked out the car was actually up the pole there, and then the individual actually opened the door and fell out," said Lyell Ballou, who lives close to the crash scene.

The crash knocked out power to about 300 homes in the area.
