A sea lion that was found shot on the Sacramento River will undergo plastic surgery to repair its muzzle.
The animal, known as Sgt. Nevis, is set for surgery Friday morning at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
Marine mammal veterinarians along with a doctor who does plastic surgery on human patients will carry out the procedure.
The sea lion was rescued and rehabilitated by The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.
Experts said the serious nature of the animal's injuries prevented its release to the wild.
Larry Allen Legans of Sacramento County is accused of shooting Sgt. Nevis in the head last November.
Authorities said it appears the animal was eating the fish Legans was trying to catch.
Legans is set to face trial in Sutter County later this month.
