Seven Folsom State Prison inmates were hospitalized after shots were fired by guards during a riot Friday night at the prison, authorities said.

Prison spokesman Luis Patino said none of the inmates suffered life-threatening injuries.

He said correctional officers opened fire as they tried to break up the riot involving about 200 inmates that erupted about 7 p.m. Friday night.

Authorities initially said five inmates were shot by the guards, but Patino clarified later that it's not clear how many were shot, or if they were hurt in some other manner during the riot.

No officers were hurt. The prison was on lockdown, with the cause of the riot under investigation.

The medium-security prison about 20 miles east of Sacramento holds about 4,000 inmates.
