A U.S. citizen wanted for allegedly sexually abusing five boys in Virginia has been arrested in Poland, authorities there said.

According to Interpol, 39-year-old John Edward Hamilton fled to Europe in late 2009.

Polish border guard spokesman Cezary Zaborski said Thursday that Hamilton was apprehended Wednesday afternoon on a bus as he was heading from Poland to Denmark.

He was handed over to police pending a court decision whether to extradite him to the U.S.

Interpol says Hamilton is a former baseball and basketball coach accused of sexually abusing the boys, ages 10 to 16, between 1992 and 2008.

Hamilton had been scheduled to plead guilty to a series of offenses before he fled, according to the international police agency.
