A small airplane crashed into a neighborhood Thursday morning shortly after takeoff, setting two houses afire. The two people believed to be aboard were presumed dead but no one on the ground was hurt, officials said.
The single-engine Bianca crashed about 10:10 a.m., said Roland Herwig, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman. It had just taken off from Addison Airport during rainy and foggy conditions and was bound for Amarillo.
“We assume two fatals on the aircraft,” Herwig said.
The plane first crashed into a vacant house, then skidded across the street into another home. Parts were scattered in the street, but most of the plane ended up in the garage of the second home, said Deputy Fire Chief Lester Mount. Both homes were set afire.
A man who uses a wheelchair and a nurse were in the second house; they both escaped unharmed, Mount said.
Further details on the victims and what may have caused the crash were not immediately available.
The crash site is about three miles south of Addison Airport in a neighborhood of ranch-style homes a few miles north of downtown.
