Southwest Airlines is expanding at Logan International Airport.

The Texas-based carrier has just launched service to Philadelphia that will put it in direct competition with US Airways, which has long had a hub in the city.

With five daily nonstop flights, Philadelphia becomes the fifth city Southwest will serve from Boston. In less than a year of flying in and out of Massachusetts, it has expanded service from Baltimore and Chicago to St. Louis and Denver, as well.

The Massachusetts Port Authority geared up for the expanded service by renovating the Terminal E space formerly used by Northwest Airlines. Southwest will use three gates, and passengers will have a new concession area.

Southwest also has room to expand to two more gates.
