Target is boosting its consumer electronics and video game offerings and changing the department's layout to make it easier for shoppers to find what they're looking for and better compete with rivals like Wal-Mart Stores.

The retailer said Monday that it will expand its video game section by 30 percent. It plans to add video game learning centers where consumers can read reviews and learn about a game's features as well as install trial stations where shoppers can test games.

The more open design layout was implemented in some stores last month and will continue to be rolled out through June.

Target also is enhancing the TV, camera and camcorder sections of its electronics departments partly through the sale of single lens reflex cameras and the addition of Amazon's Kindle electronic reader to all of its stores in June.

The retailer's announcement comes shortly after rival Wal-Mart said it would add more flat-panel TVs and other items to its electronics department.
