A year after he was taken hostage by Somali pirates, Captain Richard Phillips sits down with NBC's Matt Lauer to tell the complete story of his terrifying capture, his life at their mercy, and the daring rescue that set him free. "Dateline's" report, airing this Sunday, April 4 (7:00-8:00 PM/ET), includes rarely seen video from the U.S. Navy and an interview with the Commander-In-Chief himself about the hard decisions he had to make during one of the first foreign crises of his young presidency. Phillips will also appear live on "Today," Monday, April 5.
When asked how tough a call it was to authorize the use of deadly force knowing that one shot missed would cost the life of the captain, President Obama tells Lauer: "One of the things you discover as commander in chief is that our military is so well-trained that with confidence I can give them some clear instructions with some clear parameters and have confidence they will exercise whatever discretion they need effectively. And that's exactly what happened."
