A 66-year-old Massachusetts woman fought off a man trying to abduct her by bashing him in the face repeatedly with a rock and forcing him to flee with blood pouring from his wounds, police said.

Police in Fall River, about 50 miles south of Boston, said the woman was warned by another person about a suspicious vehicle near a park early Sunday afternoon. She picked up a fist-sized rock for protection, and minutes later a man grabbed her and tried to drag her into his car.

The victim kicked the would-be kidnapper and struck him several times with the rock, bloodying his face. He then drove away.

Police said a witness backed up the woman's account. The victim's name wasn't released.

Police checked area hospitals but did not immediately find the suspect. The case remains under investigation.
