Swinton, the UK's leading high street insurance retailer is urging motorists to reduce their speed to avoid costly damage from pot holes.
During February and March Swinton saw a sharp hike in car insurance claims due to damage caused by potholes following one of the most severe winters on records.
The leading high street insurance retailer has seen a rise in claims for damage to tyres, exhausts and tracking systems as a result of the deterioration in the road surfaces.
Swinton is warning motorists that claiming for these repairs through their car insurance could prove costly in the long run as it will affect their no claims bonus.
Steve Chelton, Insurer development manager at Swinton said: "We have seen a marked increase in the number of car insurance claims due to the thousands of new potholes that appeared in roads across the UK as temperatures began to rise. Many of these accidents were the result of drivers momentarily losing control of their vehicle in an attempt to avoid a pothole and crashing into another vehicle.
"There has also been an increase in maintenance costs to drivers as they pay out to fix damaged wheels and exhausts, something which is likely to have fallen within the excess of their car insurance policy."
