As the days get longer and the weather gets slightly warmer, homeowners are giving thieves an open invitation into their homes by leaving windows and doors open according to Swinton Insurance.
With the clocks going forward on March 28th and the evenings getting lighter, Swinton, the UK's leading home insurance retailer, is urging householders to be vigilant as they start to put the wintry weather behind them and focus on the fast approaching summer.
Steve Chelton, Insurer development manager at Swinton, said: "Every year when the clocks go back we see a sharp increase in the number of claims for stolen garden furniture as people begin to take it out of storage, as well as stories of opportunistic thieves sneaking in through open windows and doors.
"We would like to urge all homeowners to utilise simple security measures such as adding extra high quality locks on windows and doors and installing burglar alarms could to help ensure the security of any valued possessions. Inadequate security could invalidate their home insurance policies.
"Before taking garden furniture out of storage, we advise all homeowners to check that their home insurance policy provides adequate cover for garden furniture, outbuildings, garages and sheds."
