A Vancouver Olympics bus driver died of a heart attack on Monday while driving along a highway, but a crash was avoided when a colleague on the same vehicle steered it to safety, a Games spokeswoman said.

"It was a shuttle bus driver and there were five other drivers on board," games spokeswoman Renee Smith-Valade told reporters. "One of them was able to pull it over to the shoulder of the highway."

The Province newspaper reported that the incident happened on Highway 1 near King Edward Street in Coquitlam east of Vancovuer about 4 a.m. PST.

The driver, a 71-year-old man whose name was not released, died at the scene, The Province reported.

Smith-Valade said the driver worked for contractor Gameday, The Vancouver Sun reported on its Web site.
