American Airlines said Monday it is expanding the options for its frequent flier program members to earn reward miles on merchandise they purchase at retail outlets.
The airline said that for the first time, its frequent flier members can earn miles with participating AAdvantage eShopping retailers in actual stores, not just online.
The airline said that the participating retailers include Sunglass Hut, Jos. A. Bank, Sally Beauty and Golfsmith.
Several airlines, including Delta, have been increasingly offering their loyal customers the chance to earn miles when they shop, as well as the chance to use their reward miles, points or credits on things other than free flights and upgrades.
American, a unit of AMR Corp., based in Fort Worth, Texas, said leading retailers have joined together with its AAdvantage eShopping mall to offer more ways to earn miles.
Members of American's frequent flier program can rack up extra miles by using a registered credit or debit card on purchases with participating AAdvantage eShopping retailers on the Web site, at retail stores or through retail catalogs.
